Timo Werner has expressed his gratitude to ‘captain’ Son Heung-min (Tottenham) and his teammates.
Tottenham defeated Crystal Palace 3-1 in the 27th round of the 2023-2024 Premier League on Wednesday (March 3) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England.
With the win, Spurs moved to 50 points in the standings, closing in on Aston Villa (4th, 55 points).
Spurs lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Guglielmo Vicario was in goal, with Emerson Royal, Christine Romero, Micky van der Vaan, and Destiny Udogie forming the back four. Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur were in the middle of the park, with Werner, James Maddison, and Dejan Klucepski in the second line. Up front, Son Heung-min started.
Tottenham had the decisive chance in the 17th minute. Son played a perfect pass to Werner, who found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper as he slipped in behind the defense. However, Son’s assist was wasted as Werner’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper.
Werner turned the tide in the second half, setting up Eberechi Eze in the 14th minute to equalize in the 32nd minute. Eberezi Eze finished a Brennan Johnson cross from the right side with a simple right-footed finish.
It was Werner’s first goal for Tottenham. Werner joined Spurs in January from Leipzig. He was brought in to fill the void left by Son Heung-min at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup, but manager Ange Postecoglou has kept Werner as an option even after Son’s return.
First and foremost, Werner has been a regular since making his debut for Manchester United in the 21st round of the league on October 14th. Although he continues to lack the fatal decisiveness he showed at Chelsea, he is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to creating chances.
Werner, who had two assists in his previous five league games, finally found the back of the net in his sixth league game of the season. After scoring, Werner immediately made his way to the left goal-frame to celebrate. However, none of his Tottenham teammates rushed to congratulate him.
“I wanted to celebrate after I scored, but I saw that nobody was coming,” Werner told Tottenham’s Spurs broadcaster Spursplay after the game.
“I wanted to celebrate after the goal, but I saw that nobody was coming,” Werner said, “and I realized that it was only 1-1. I realized that I had scored a goal and it was only 1-1 and we needed to score another goal to win, but I was happy to score,” he added, smiling.
In fact, as soon as Werner scored, captain Son Heung-min immediately grabbed the ball and ran to the halfway line to speed things up, emphasizing to his players that 카지노 they needed another goal to win. Werner realized this too, and after a short ceremony, he returned to his position.
Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has been inspiring confidence in the squad.
“Heung-min offered encouragement rather than criticism after Werner missed a one-on-one with the opposition goalkeeper,” the Mirror reported.
“As a striker, it can be a downer to miss such a good chance. I told Werner in German to keep playing because he has a lot of potential, just like the equalizer. Werner had a fantastic game and helps the team a lot,” he said, showing his captain’s class.
“I’m so happy to come back from the Asian Cup and score my first goal. It was even better to see the fans cheering, and I think it was important to get the three points. We tried to show our football,” he said, hiding his delight at the victory.
“It’s nice to have a group that doesn’t say anything (about mistakes),” Werner said of his first-half miss. My teammates supported me. They really helped me and the team,” he said, thanking his teammates.
