Who are the worst finishers in the Premier League?
On April 4, the British publication Givme Sports published a ranking of the worst finishers in the Premier League this season, titled “Top 10 Worst Finishers in the PL 2023-24”.
The ranking was based on the difference between actual goals scored and goal expectancy (xG). If the xG is greater than the actual goals scored, and the difference is significant, it means that the player failed to convert many chances into goals. The list includes big club players like Elling Holland, Darwin Núñez, Bruno Fernández, and Nicola Jackson.
At the top of the list was Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Everton striker has been struggling this season. He has only scored three goals. His goal expectancy (xG) was 9.2. “He has missed 12 big chances, and his last goal was already last October against West Ham United,” the publication added.
In second place is Nicola Jackson. With eight goals in the league this season, Jackson seems to be doing her job, but she should have scored more. His goal expectancy (xG) was 12.3. He joined Chelsea this season from Villarreal and had fans excited after a strong preseason.
However, once the season got underway, Jackson’s decision-making was at its worst, with 15 missed big chances. His poor decision-making has led Chelsea to look for a new frontline striker in the summer transfer window.
Fernandes is next on the list. Although he’s not a striker, Fernandes hasn’t scored enough goals for his chances. With three goals this season, Fernandes has a goal expectancy (xG) of 6.2. “An unbelievable header in a 0-2 loss to Tottenham Hotspur didn’t help,” the publication explained.
In fourth place was Núñez, the ‘goalie’. Despite scoring 10 goals this season, Núñez has missed just as many chances. 20 missed big chances. Núñez has the clutch ability to score goals when his team needs them, but he hasn’t been able to finish in perfect opportunities.
“In the 4-1 win over Chelsea in January, Núñez hit the post four times and even missed a penalty,” the media said of Núñez.
Fifth place was a surprise. Holland is currently the PL’s top scorer. With 18 goals this season, Holland is still in scoring form. He was the top scorer last season and is looking to repeat that feat this season. Holland has a goal expectancy (xG) of 20.8.
However, Holland has also been criticized for missing chances. He was mocked and criticized for missing a chance from one meter against Manchester United on April 4. “In the Manchester 토토 derby at the Etihad Stadium, Holland had the best missed chance of the season,” the outlet added.
Enzo Fernandez was next. With three goals, Fernandez had a goal expectancy (xG) of 5.7 and missed six perfect chances. Chelsea alone had two players in the ranking. “Fernandes doesn’t have the instincts of a proper goalkeeper,” the publication explained. In seventh place was Everton’s Beto, who scored two goals.
In eighth place was Son’s teammate Pedro Foro. Despite not scoring a single goal, Foro had a Goal Expectancy (xG) of 2.2. He doesn’t have much to criticize about his defense. He’s been a valuable addition to Tottenham’s offense this season with his work rate and accurate kicks. Behind him are Luis Diaz and Frank Onyekah.
