Spain’s national soccer team center back Rodrigo Rodriguez and captain Alvaro Morata could face disciplinary action from the European Football Association (UEFA) for shouting “Spanish soil” in reference to Gibraltar, the British port city off the southern tip of Spain.
UEFA has opened an investigation into Spain’s Rodri and Morata for chanting “Gibraltar is Spanish soil” during their Euro 2024 victory celebration on Tuesday, the BBC reported.
The Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) wrote to UEFA earlier this week to formally complain about the political chants at Spain’s Euro 2024 victory celebration.
UEFA has sent an official investigator to determine whether Rodri, Morata, and others violated UEFA regulations.
Gibraltar, located at the southern tip of Spain, is a port city that has been under British rule since the 18th century. Spain has always demanded the return of Gibraltar.
At a celebration in Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles on Saturday after Spain’s 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final, Rodri and Morata chanted “Gibraltar is Spanish soil” to a melodic tune in front of tens of thousands of their country’s fans.
The crowd then sang along, jumping in place to the beat and waving their arms in the air.
The other players on the stage joined in, dancing and clapping along.
The Gibraltar Football Association criticized the Spanish team’s victory celebration, saying it was “extremely provocative and offensive” and that “such behavior should not be tolerated in football.”
The Gibraltar Football Association joined UEFA as a full member in 2013. 바카라사이트
